There's been a lot of talk on the Street Fighter competition circuit about the superiority of Japanese controls (mostly at a Shoryuken.com about a month ago) but I think this is only half of it - the 2 major sticking points where the shorter stick lengths, which mean less movement needed for controller actions like double-quarter-circles and 720 degree rotations needed for some fighting games, and leaf style switches (which the above pictured sticks don't have) which the fighting game crowd seems to prefer the feel of.
