I've done this a few times for people, both with the I-PAC and direct to joystick port. Simply wire the grounds to a 2 (or more) position switch, which will have the effect of isolating whichever shared controls you do not want to use at the time. Because you have 'cut' the ground wire to particular controls, the circuit will not close if you mistakenly use them.

For example - a control panel with 2 8-way sticks and 6 buttons each, and also 1 4-way stick with 4 buttons. I have 'shared' the 4-way stick and buttons with the appropriate Player 1 inputs. By putting the ground wires thru a SPDT (single pole, double terminal) switch I can toggle between the 4-way controls and one set of 8-way controls without using any extra inputs on the I-PAC.

This obviously depends on what controls you want to use with each other - you may want to draw a diagram to help work out how to map out your wiring. Rest assured it is surprisingly easy to do, and heaps cheaper than having to buy another I-PAC.

Feel free to email me if you need any more info and I'd be happy to help.

You may also want to explore the option of a trackball and/or mouse that connect direct to PS2 or COM port as well. Check out www.imperialusa.com - they have a PS2 trackball that a few BYOAC regulars appear to get good results with.

Hope this helps,

: : Thanks for the info. So two joysticks can be connected to the same inputs so long as they are not being used at the same time. I would imagine this works the same for the pushbuttons. However, how many is too many per input or can you conceivably connect as many as you need as long as they are not being used at the same time.
: thanks, e

: : You should be able to hook them up with Ipac, but you won't be able to use all the joysticks at the same time. You could wire the 4-ways and rotarys in pairs using the same inputs on the ipac.

: : :
: : : the Ipac only has 28 unique inputs. there are also 27 shifted inputs, but they cannot be the same as inputs used during gameplay.

: : : I have a 4 player panel with 2 buttons per joystick and 4 player start buttons - that's a total of 28 inputs. All other functions are shift functions

: : : : My console is going to have a 4 way joy, 4 way joy with top fire and two rotary 8 way joys in addition to a spinner and trackball. I will also have 6 buttons per rotary stick, 4 for each 4 way and 2 to be shared by the trackball and spinner. My question is will I be able to connect everything I want to a standard i-pac and opti-pac trackball\spinner interface.
: : : : thanks, e
