Make it modular. I just built myself a control-panel-to-computer "black box", with db-15
connectors for each of players 1-4, mame control,
and coin/start. then I built the first control
panel with 2 joysticks, 6 buttons each, and pause.
It just plugs into the black box. so I can build
other control panels with 4 players, spinners,
trackballs, etc. I used Ron's MK64 encoder ($73 shipped), and used up about 60 of the inputs. It'll handle just about any game I want to play.
So you can start with a reasonable control panel and add the crazy ones down the road if you decide
you really want to.
