Arcadeos shift keys and joystick

I use a hacked 6 button joystick in my cab. I use buttons 1,2 and 3 for gameplay 4 and 5 for player 1 and 2 and button 6 is insert coin. all work great but I have no extra button for escape (to return back to arcadeos)

I have tried using arcadeos's shift keys they work fine with the keyboard (1+2 =esc) but they don't appear to work with the Joystick, am I doing something wrong, or is this just the way it is.
