I also went with the MDF solution. A 4'x8' sheet can be had for under $20US and one sheet was just about enough for my cocktail table.
Yes the dust can be annoying, but that's the only knock on it. It's very easy to sand down when finishing it -- probably moreso than particle board or plywood.
