I think you will find most people who are fans of the newer mame games, especially 2 player fighting games, go for the figure 1 style in order to keep the feel as close to the arcade as possible. Many people have built their skills on these games using that traditional 6 button layout, and would be all screwed up trying to use a modified 6 button layout, even if it is more ergonomically sound.
My button layout is like this:

4 5 6
I have 7 buttons mapped to 6 keys .. a standard 6 button layout with an extra button on the top row, used to replicate neo geo controls more accurately.
