I'm an Athlon fan, but clock for clock, the PIII is faster with the current compiler. Of course, the Athlon is much cheaper, so you could get a higher clock speed for the same price.
The PIV is a strange beast, and it will take some time for compilers (esp free ones like djgpp) to adapt to it. Currently at 1.5GHz it is beaten easily in most standard apps by Athlon 1.2GHzs. I have yet to hear benchmarks on emus though.
