I suggest buying sink cut-outs. (The panel shown was made from a sink cut-out) A local lumber co. sells them for $3. It is the piece that they cut from a countertop to drop in the sink. It is 3/4" and is already laminated. They had 2 stacks 4 feet tall. I sorted through and found 5 nice panels.

The only downside I know of is that the material is partical board...plenty sturdy for a control panel...but I doubt it would work well with t-molding.... I am not sure how well the partical board would hold up with a router slot in it. I paint the edges black...or the color of the cabinet and it looks good to me.

Before I found these sink cut-outs I also bought a sheet of laminate from Lowes. I chose the black embossed. Worked great...and you can choose plywood if it is important to you to finish the edge with t-molding.
