what material to use for coverting the control panel

I think I'm going to paint it black and the use something to cover it, but I'm not sure at this point. One possibility is to use laminate, plexi or policharbonate (I don't know well these materials, so any suggestion is welcomed). This would give it a shiny look. The problem is that maybe the use of the joystick may give it a look of being worn out, loosing brightness or getting scratches. Moreover, when you put your hands on these materials, don't you leave marks? I don't want to have to wash my hands everytime I'm going to use the panel, and then clean it again after playing. The other solution I've thought of is using some kind of rugger black material, which don't need any cleaning, although it's not shiny. I don't know the name of this, so please help! Has any of you used some kind of leather for this?
