Should I hide my trackball plate or sink it flush with my panel?

I will probably start work on my new control panel tomorrow and I needed some feedback. I'll be covering my 3/4 wood panel with formica and will be putting a happs trackball on it. I have one of the 6 inch trackball plates that happs sells and normal installation would leave this sightly higher (not sure how thick the metal is but you get the picture) than the formica on the rest of the panel. Should I:
a) route the wood so the metal trackball plate is sunken to be flush with the wood and then cover the plate/wood with formica (the plate would not be visible).
b) leave the wood alone, cover the panel with formica, route the formica, and install the plate so it is flush with the formica (the plate would be visible but everything would be flush)
c) just cover the wood with formica as normal and then mount the plate as normal (the plate would be visible and would be a little higher than the formica)

Thanks in advance for the feedback!
