direct pad pro will only work on one machine, ive tried many

I recently built the snes direct pad pro interface.
It works great one machine but I cant get it to work on any others. It has been suggested to me that it might be that direct pad only works on older lpt ports.
Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks, Carter
