All the RF based keyboards and Mice I have used had a range of about 6', so they wouldn't do what he needs. Another solution would be an IR based keyboard and mouse, like the one I use on the PC in my entertainment center. Then any IR remote extender would probobly work.

The whole idea seems a little silly though. A couple cheap PC's, a hub, and netmeeting would really be the way to do it. Setting up a home network isn't that difficult.

: The solution is to not use cabling at all. RF will do what you want. The main difficulty will be finding a PC monitor RF transmitter. If he's willing to go with a TV for upstairs and has a TV out card, then there's no trouble finding a composite video trasmitter. He'll need to get an RF based keyboard and mouse device. I've used RF based X10 controllers from outside the house (and several feet away), and I'm assuming that RF based PC devices have simular range.
