Ahh, I believe the original posted comments came from the Shoryuken.com Streetfighter forums, I remember the discusions. There had just been a Japan vs. U.S. invitational competition, and it sparked a lot of interest in the Japanese arcades.

My understanding is that the Japanese arcades still use leaf-switch style controls as opposed to the cherry switches over here. Most of the fighting game enthusiasts prefer the feel of this. More description of course is found in the original news item.

The Japanese cabinets are also mostly all sit down - (not cocktail, but all shorter with stools at each one) and the majority of the fighting games I've seen have 2 monitors back to back, so you don't actually stand next to your opponent, they sit on the opposite side of you. The controls look pretty much identical to the Agetec/Sega arcade stick that came out for the Dreamcast at it's launch. (The one with the bright green buttons and ball-joystick: the arcade machines I've seen are still that bright green, too!) Of course they "feel" nothing like that, since those sticks still have cherry-style switches.

In general, I think the Japanese take their arcades a little more seriously (the competition is definetly much more stiff!) and from what I've heard, the taking care of the arcade machines is a much more serious job than it is here: Japanese arcades keep their machines in much better condition than in the states, replacing parts much more frequently to keep things in running order, and the maintenance staff is actually quite helpful and experienced.

: Regarding the piece of news posted in this webpage, I would like to ask if you have more information on these controls (pics, webpages, where to buy etc.) Thanks.
