Changing the file name to armorao.png fixed the background art. This also fixed the game crashing in the Mame37 betas.
As far as sound, in MAME V37b6,A@H lists no sound chip for the game and the MAME info screen also does not show a sound chip. Sortinfo shows the sound as zero channels, but shows the driver sound status as good. I also checked through the V37 and V36 Whatsnew.txt files and could find no reference to Armor Attack sound, so I think I was wrong about samples and sound is not emulated (yet, hopefully!).
