I think the biggest limitation of a PC with a spinner or trackball is that if you spin it fast enough it starts registering the movement in the opposite direction. I don't think there is any way around this on a PC. It doesn't seem like the microcontroller (interface) can sample the data fast enough to keep up. I tried many mice :-( controllers on my Tron spinner and some worked a lot better than others. I ended up using a Happs trackball interface and that works rather well. I can still spin the knob super fast and get it to change directions or quiver in the same spot. But I never spin it that fast during a game anyway.
