I understand that most of the regulars at this site have some sort of technical background(going by the "So, what do you do for a living?" poll a few days ago), but there are newbies who don't know squat about anything electronic.(I'm trying to crawl out of that category myself).

Great Idea! I've never thought of that really... the problem is however, as was allready stated, keyboards vary too much. I could however film my next project which uses the Hagstrom KE72 + Trackball, it's not a keyboard hack perse, but it could cover control panel/cabinet construction. Let me know if you're intereseted.
