Do you play games that require diagonals? For example if you play gauntlet and have to shoot creatures between diagonal openings in walls, you should not be able to do it with a true 4-way joystick unless you go quickly back and forth between the two nearest direction. Or try street fighter, where you need to use a diagonal to jump forward, or jump back. With a 4-way joystick you would only be able to jump up, not up and forward/back at the same time.
This is why I have two 8-ways and one 4-way on my control panel.
