: After further research into the guts of a MAME project, I have pretty much given up on using a TV-Out card, due to catastophic failure of the hardware required to make it work properly.

: Reading into AdvanceMAME and Mon-ARC, it looks like using a video card to drive an arcade monitor directly, is closer to what I want to build. But I have a few basic questions about such a setup....

: Planned System Setup.

: AMD K6-2 500
: SB AWE64 ISA
: Voodoo3 2000 AGP
: D-Link Ethernet Card
: HAPP 19" Standard Arcade Monitor
: AdvanceMAME / Mon-ARC Plus

: Q1) Can windows be used with this setup?
: (While I intend to run MAME in pure DOS, I would like the ability to launch Windows for file maintainance, and network support)

: Q2) Are vertiaclly oriented games possible with this setup?

: Q3) Are there any games that simply will NOT work with this style of display setup?

: --Teh (all I can think of at this time)

Most people choose a TV because you can get more screen for less $. But you hit it dead on, I find that its really not worth it. However... I see no reason for you to buy an arcade monitor. Most folks use an arcade monitor because they have one lying around, or they want to use the one that's in the cabinet they're gutting.

A standard computer monitor, will run windows, and play all games, and cost less $. A 19" computer monitor is much less than a 19" arcade monitor.

Nonetheless here are the answers to your questions.

Q1) Yes, i've seen it work in 16 color mode, hard to navigate around in though. It may support higher resolutions, we were afraid to try it.

Q2) It depends on how you mount the screen. Yes it will work, but if you mount the screen vertically horizontal games, squish up and vise versa if you place it horizontally.

Q3) None that I have seen, but probably there are a few. All of the classics work.
