i can understand you want to keep things cheap but a keyboard hack CAN give many problems. I say CAN because if you should be so lucky to find a keyboard like the first one on this page

This was the very first keyboard i tried and it has every pin labeled.

Another thing you may want to try is a joypad hack, easy to solder and probably cheaper than a keyboard hack even.
