You're checking to see if you have a CONNECTION between two points.

Try this: your multimeter will most likely have two wired prongs on it, right? Now set your multimeter to "continuity" and touch the two prongs together. What happens? You have "continuity", that's what. In other words, you have "connection".

Sooo...if you place one end of the multimeter at one end of a wiring series and the other end of the multimeter at the other end of your wiring series, and the multimeter responds, then you know that you have a solid connection between those two points.
