I think there's a growing number of people that post on this messageboard who are biting their tongues when it comes to your posts, Charlie.
It is usually reasonable to assume that most people will heed advice given when they ask questions such as yours, and it is becoming increasingly obvious that you just can't come to grips with what is involved in hacking a keyboard to your control panel, or whatever it is you are building.
Your definition of cheap or inexpensive is amusing, especially when it is at odds with what so many others here have already learnt.
Just think back to your first couple of posts (difficult because of how many there have been, I know) and look at how many people, including myself, suggested that you will save a lot of grief, confusion and complication by purchasing an encoder.
All you are managing to do here is fill up one of the most friendly and informative message boards on the 'net with posts containing the same, regurgitated questions. In short, you have become pretty annoying!
So how about you carefully consider your preconceived ideas about cost etc, do us all a favour and spend the extra US$20 to get an I-PAC??? The amount of time it will save you will by itself more than compensate for the extra outlay.
