Quite expected, IMO.
3dfx really made some questionable decisions when confronted by serious competition (NVIDIA, ATI to an extent...). It was, like you said, an odd situation: At first, they were the premier (far and away) maker of consumer-grade 3D cards (Voodoo1, Voodoo2). As soon as competition got fierce, they made some VERY bad business moves and signed their death warrant.
Shame. Competition is good for all of us - keeps pricing down, forces innovation. Of the two, I've always preferred NVIDIA as a company to 3dfx (though I've owned both brands of cards).
