Same here.. I've used both a keyboard hack and the encoder, and the encoder is hands down the best investment. If time=money to you, the KE-24 encoder will save you mucho $$$ and hours. :)
The only time I'd consider the keyboard hack is if you are doing a one person setup, or 2 people with no more than three buttons each. Anything over,
(such as 2 joys, 6 buttons each), it's nearly impossible to use a KB hack (Trust me!).
Another tip: (Taken with a grain of salt) :)
Buy the cabinet, monitor, computer, etc.. first.
Spend hours on refinishing and building the darn thing.
After all of this time and money spent, the $100 dollars
will be nothing!!
Yep, I'm another figuring this would be a cheap hobby, no
more than $3-400.. $1000+ Later... Hmm... :)
I don't regret it a bit, though! Even after finishing,
I'll still have a lot of fun playing/tinkering with it,
not to mention helping out as much as I can (and watching
the progress/intuitiveness of others) on this board.
Good luck,
Mike
: I totally agree. The $100.00 for the KE-24 was entirely worth it. I have hacked two programmable Gravis game pads and one keyboard, all of which worked fairly well, but had some problems. The KE-24 is much better and problem free.

: : If you can afford the extra $100 for the keyboard encoder, do it. IMHO, it's better from a gameplay standpoint (ghosting/multiple key presses). Plus, it saved me time.
: : : Hello everybody..
: : : My head is going around and around at all the information that is out there to wire up a arcade machine! My question is does a keyboard hack using the PC2JAMMA project circuit boards stop key blocking and other keyboard faults? Or should I go for a matrix system as Mr Salty's web site uses (Mate great info site)
: : : Thanks in advanced
