Type of wood for control panel?

I've constructed a prototype control panel made of styrofoam to attach to my emptied cabinet (the old CP was made of iron and was difficult to modify). What type of wood should I buy to make the final CP? Needs to by somewhat lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to drill/cut/screw into.
