Please help with 8 way leaf joysticks

I'm converting a Defender cab to mame. Anyway I bought some leaf joysticks from Wico and have them hooked up to an IPAC. I don't see any of the contacts touching on either the switch or the connector ends but I'm getting continual signals from both of the joysticks. I connected the ground to the "inside" (looking down at it) portion of the switch and the "signal" to the outside portion. I have one ground daisy chained for the left controls (stick and 2 buttons) and the other for the right (stick and 2 buttons) controls. I'm about ready to trash the sticks and buy Happ microswitched ones. Anybody have any idea what could be wrong? I'm jonesin' for some Robotron.
