...it seems to me that the issue is getting a P'N'P sound card to work properly in DOS, hence the reference to ctcm.exe (essentially a p'n'p configuration manager, since these devices don't have 'hard' settings for IRQ, Address, DMA, etc.).

The best place to get the full suite of CTCM, CTCU, installation, and diagnostic utilities, is to go to www.soundblaster.com and download the latest DOS management utility. This assumes that your card is a SB, but it works even with SB compatable. I've used this technique to get both Vibra 16s and AWE32s to work with DOS.
