I reckon that they didn't bother fully isolating
them.

Anyway - at first I thought it was something
simple, as if you measure the current on the pad
you'll see that the broken DC is chucking out less
than is required to drive the pad.

I took the required DC supply directly from the
DC's internal PSU to drive the pad - still no
joy.

As far as I could tell, a proprietary (not to mention surfaced mounted) input IC was toast.
- propietary + surface mounted pretty well
excludes the chance of a 'home' repair,
so I gave up at that point.
