Happ trackball interface question

I received my Happ trackball interface yesterday. Since I tend to be on the frugal side I decided to tap into the +5VDC of the PC power supply instead of spending $19.00 for a power supply that I had no place to plug in anyway. Anyway, I am having no luck getting the PC to find it, either in Win98 or pure DOS. I have an old trackball with the original encoder circuits. Is it possible they (the encoders) are incompatible with the interface? Any input will be appreciated...
