5.1 just means 5 speakers and a subwoofer. Dolby Digital means a specific type of digital audio encoding. Not all systems which sould use 5.1 speakers can decode Dolby Digital signals. This is why you shouldn't buy a "Dolby Digital-ready" 5.1 speaker system: it would need an external decoder to use the Dolby Digital signal. Otherwise it would either not process a Dolby Digital stream, or downsample it to a crappy stream.
