I forgot to mention... the source code for the TSR is available so at least the hurdle of starting from scratch may be averted...

: Thanks - I think :(

: I sent off a quick e-mail to the guy who sells these units explaining the problem but have yet to hear anything back... if indeed what you say is correct, how easy/difficult is it to rewrite the TSR to use the non-maskable interrupt? Not that I would know where to start, but I wouldn't mind learning how or at least where to go for some advice... I'm definitely quite keen on using this remote control idea with my cabinet!

: Again, thanks,

: : I'd wager that because MAME is a protected mode program, your TSR program doesn't get a chance to operate. There is not much that can be done about this short of rewriting the TSR to use the non-maskable interrupt like some sound card emulation programs do. (This is what allows SB emulation for PCI cards in DOS).

: : : Folks:

: : : After seeing an earlier post about IR remote control I thought this would be a great way to limit the number of buttons I used on my cabinet and also retain most of the flexibility without the need for a keyboard...

: : : So I ponied up the cash ($25) for the IR unit (link attached) and after receiving it (very promptly I may add) I went about setting this thing up... an absolute breeze to do using the DOS utility... it even works once loaded from the command line - pressing '5' on the remote control (I used a simple remote I had hanging around) results in a '5' showing at the command prompt. HOWEVER... when I load MAME (I am still using pure DOS here) directly after loading the TSR IR device, MAME does not respond to any of the keypresses...

: : : Here is what I can tell you... the IR receiver unit is plugged into the COM1 serial port and from what I can get from the documentation and source code to the software is that when a remote key is pressed the COM1 device sends an appropriate code to the keyboard buffer... Now after my lengthy verbage... can anyone hazard a guess as to WHY Mame (or ArcadeOS or GameLauncher for that matter) are NOT responding to the remote key presses?!?! Oh, yeah... one other thing... when I actually exit MAME, sure enough on the command line are all of the various characters that I had pressed?!?

: : : Any help for the thoroughly confused (and $25 poorer) would be greatly appreciated...

: : : Mark
