Screen size question

I am using DOS MAME with arcadeos front end. Since many of the games run at different sizes, my monitor has to be set up for each resolution. The problem is, I am not sure I am setting the height/width proportions correctly. Is there some kind of guide I can use to align my screen in each of the resolutions/refresh rates?
