I use MAME32 on my regular home PC just to check out new games etc.

I use my own build of DOS MAME in my cabinet because:

Better performance (you can never get enough, can you?)
DOS is simple (if you are already used to it), compact (my installation is less than 1 meg), boots fast (much faster than Win9x), easy to shut down (I just flipp the power switch)
My setup is close to the original "enbedded system" look and feel of an original arcade game (the frontend is one key factor).
I have decided to only use MAME in my cab (no other emulators) because it is already emulating more games than I will ever have the time to play (I only miss Elevator Action II).
I just love the DOS frontend AdvanceMenu!

There are only two versions of DOS MAME that are of interest to me and that is:

Official DOS MAME (because it is the original and it is easy to build your own if you want to remove things like ..."press OK"...) if you use a multisync monitor or TV (depends a bit on what graphics adapter you use).

Advance MAME if you use an arcade monitor, fixed freq. monitor or a TV (can also be used with a multisync monitor to get real scan lines etc. if you got the knowledge, graphics adapter and the time to fiddle with the config utils).

I find Advance Menu to be the best MAME frontend (DOS mame has no GUI as you probably already knows, thats why you need a frontend like Advance Menu or Arcade OS etc.)

Thats my point of view (at the moment)...

: Hola! I'm writing here because I'm a great fun of coin'ops emulators and I've read some messages in this forum that really surprise me. First of all, I believe that many people here are true arcade experts, while I'm just a newbie, although I've been using emuz for more than 3 years now. My main doubts are about Mame. This emu is becoming like a universal emulator for 2D gamez, and thus it's becoming more and more importart for me. And now the point is that most of you use DOS mame, and rare versions, the advantages of which I totally ignore. For instance, I've read that you use ArcadeOS (what is it?), Vsync Mame, while I'm using Mame32. I don't know if your decissions for using DOS versions or specific versions of Mame is due to the fact that you use Arcade monitors or for any other reason in particular. My purpose is to use Mame in my computer (Celeron 500, 192 mbs of ram, Geforce DDR and 17' LG monitor. However, I notice some defects with Mame32, such as slowdowns, loss of fps, impefect smooth scroll (maybe vsync?), specially with the most modern games. I don't know if the problems have to do with the lack of power of my computer, the poor level of emulation of some games or somthing else. Anyway, I'd be very happy if you were so kind to share your knowledge on these issues. Thankyou, and sorry for my English.
