Best DOS MAME and frontend that supports the Hotrod SE

Hello all, I just got my Hotrod SE yesterday. Needless to say I went to bed much, much, much too late. Anyway I'm using MAME32 37b9 and had some nasty screen lockups playing SmashTV and Robotron. I hear the DOS version runs smoother and better. Is there a frontend that will support my new glorious controller and also support the newest version of MAME. Actually I guess it really doesn't have to be the newest version but one that is stable and reliable. I'm running a P-II 300 with 128 megs and an old pci All in Wonder s-videoed to my 27in tv. It works great except for that nasty screen lockup. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

P.S. has anyone modifed the SE to include a spinner and trackball? Just wondering.
