I did something similar to you. I went to Radio Shack and paid too much money (like you always do at Radio Shack) for 2 blue LEDs. I took off the green ones (soldered in), put the red ones where the green were, and then added the blue to where the red were. Now my trackball glows blue, and when you hit a button, it turns red. I like it. I dodn't remember the exact part number from radio shack, they were the 5v ones, and they are very bright. They may have even been labeled as extra bright LED, or something.
It should work.

: Hello! Hey, something to look for when you buy your CompUSA Crystal trackball. There seems to be two kinds, one that the lead wires are soldered in and one that has a plug into the board. The main difference is the one that has the soldered leads glows that sick weak GREEN by default!! I had to clip these off and swap them with the red
LED's. Just a little FYI. Also, I read on one of these posts that these are 5 volt LED's, so I picked up some of the cool blue ones at Radio Shack but they were very weak. I'm wondering if this model also changed the voltage of the LED's as well? Any thoughts??

: Game on!
