Has anyone successfully compiled ADVANCEMAME themselves?

I have been doing my own compiling for MAME so that I can play MSLUG2 and MSLUGX.
I love ADVANCEMAME so i tried to compile using the instructions posted both here and in the "build.txt" file.

From the instructions, I replaced the contents of src\msdos with the contents of the source file.

The next step is the one that confuses me. It directs the user to apply a patch src.dif to the MAME sources. I believe the instructions are either unclear or I am dense.

The directions state: Apply the patch src.dif to the original MAME source with:

copy src.dif \mame\src
cd \mame\src
patch -p5 < src.dif

Does this mean to copy the file src.dif to the directory mame\src? I did this.
I believe my problem is the next part. I switched to the directory \mame\src and typed "patch -p5 < src.dif" but it asked me which file I was patching. HMMM. I am not having much luck.

Anyone with any advice please drop me a line. I love ADVANCEMAME but do not want to give up Metal Slug.

John
