I went the same route. I hacked a keyboard, I hacked a joypad, I hacked the powerramp. All are inferior to and more time intensive than the IPAC. In the end, it is much more of a pain in the ass and does not work nearly as well.
Don't be pennywise and pound foolish, shell out the $49 for an IPAC. It is the best investment you can make in your project.
