I will have to agree with the other post here. Using the 1 1/8 will work, but you will have to make some adjustments. What I wound up doing was routing out about half the wood in my 3/4" particle board to "raise" the joystick up more.
By recessing the joystick housing higher into the wood I was able to make the stick feel better in all directions -- diagonals included.
