First set up some screenmodes using mv.exe, then activate advanceVBE(and VGA2TV if you like) and then you should be able to use normal mame. using this method i got Zsnes running on my television using a VGA 2 SCART cable.
Just wondering, why do you want to use normal mame and not AdvanceMame ?
