: I disagree. I have one in my classroom and have played mame on it very nicely. It is a monitor and has sufficiently better resolution than a tv. Because you are limited to 800x600,though, it seems a bit more "blurred" than your desktop monitor, but in my opinion would work well in a mame machine. My $.02

I think he was referring to the fact that a 36" screen wouldn't be ideal for a cabinet. The scan converter was a standard (for that time) 800x600 SVGA scan converter to the TV's SVIDEO capability of about 680 horizontal lines, much like an S-video conversion. It does work well, and is cool, but there is better technology out there now, that handle 1024x768 somehow. If you can get one of these cheap, it's certainly a fun alternative to a PC monitor.

: : IIRC from seeing these in person, these aren't really much more than a television with a built-in scan convertor. Sometimes these are also known as presentation monitors. A while ago Gateway sold these as part of a computer system that would sit in a home entertainment system insted of on a desk. Interesting concept that didn't fly very well. In my opinion this wouldn't be a very good idea for monitor for a MAME machine.
