Using an Arcade Monitor with MAME/ARCADEOS?

I have read conflicting info on how to use an arcade monitor with MAME. I have a Jamma cab and can hook up everything to a fingure board (shouldn't be a problem), but my question is can you turn on the cab and computer at the same time, or do you have to wait for the computer to load ARCADEOS with the arcade monitor scan rates (beep is heard) then turn on the cab.

Will it hurt the arcade monitor if both are turned on at once (I will not alway be around to make sure the correct procedure is used).

I have seen ways to use the parallel port to signal the monitor but that seems very complicated and I'm pretty sure I would have problems creating it.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
