A keyway or key pin is usually an absent pin on the male side...and the female side has the hole filled...
These are especially usefull on straight connectors...so if you have 2 10 pin connectors the key on the first might be pin 3 and the key on the second might be pin 5...that way you wouldn't plug them in incorrectly.
