Best DOS MAME settings?

I was looking to improve the speed of my DOS MAME machine. Can anyone recomend some good defaults to speed things up (like tweak, etc.) NBA JAME TE is running pretty slow on my AMD 350. How important is the video card? I am just using the on motherboard video card without any special drivers or anything.
