I don't remember who said it, or if they have a web site or if it was a message here, but there was one person who commented once about playing Ikari type 12 position joystick games with the optical rotary joystick, and they said although the optical one worked, it just wasn't the same. I haven't tried optical but I do have the 12 position joysticks and I love them in MAME! The interface that uses them in MAME was already referenced in the previous message by Dr. D.

I haven't actually used optical rotary's at all so I don't know what type of feel they have but for those games that were designed with the 12 position joystick as its hardware, there's nothing like the real thing. Maybe if you wanted 2 rotating joysticks you could have one 12 position and one optical rotary. Both could be configured to mimic each other in MAME (meaning, for games like caliber 50 that used optical, you could use 12 pos just as well, or games like Ikari using 12 pos, you could use optical) so your functionality would be still the same, but when you really wanted to play one or the other type of game with utmost authenticity, you could just use that actual joystick for that game. If you're playing 2 player simultaneous, one guy would have the real thing and one guy would have a working rotary that's cloning the real "feel"...I think it'd be a good compromise in trying to choose one or the other.

You also aren't limited to Happs for the 12 position rotary, there's other places that sell the REAL yellow handle rotary 12 position joystick just like the arcade originals. I think the link to Video Connection is www.videoconnect.com (it's mentioned on this site somewhere) and they sell $9.99 12 position rotary joysticks that are the real thing, not a clone! I like the originals. Brings me back 10 years.
