You're right as far as the differences - the rotary 'clicks' and the optical doesn't. But they interface entirely differently. The optical sticks hook into a Happ (or compatable) trackball interface. Up 'til recently, nobody had a clue how to interface the rotary sticks, but there's a link here somewhere to a site that's done it. I don't know of anybody else here that's tried it, so I can't say how one compares to the other.
The optical is definately easier.
