Rotary Joysticks

I'm planning on having 4 joysticks in my cabiinet, two of which I want to be rotary sticks for Ikari warrior type games. I noticed Happs has two kinds, the optical stick and a 12-position stick. Questions:

Anyone know the differences? Is the optical one "free-spinning" while the 12-position one "clicks" into positions? Do they both use the same kind of interface (mouse port)? And lastly anyone have either or both and can recommend one? I'm leaning toward the optical one since that seems to be what more people have used...
