I found there is a lot of variation between the models of cats. The one that seems to read the most codes is ver 0.3. You can recognize it by the rectangular scanning hole with no cover over the mouth.
The problem was I couldn't find a barcode printing programs cheap/free. So, I wrote my own.
I have a version running that will generate Code 3 of 9 (full alpha-numeric with 5 symbols). With a good laser printer (600 dpi) I can get about 46 characters across a 8" sheet of paper. Ver 0.1 or 0.3 cats can also read this in enhanced mode which will give you all 128 standard ASCII codes, but takes twice the space. Ver 0.3 scanners can read codes longer than 45 characters, Ver 0.2 seems to max out at about 15~20.
I'll let everyone know when it is ready for distribution.
