Having reviewed the message board archives of this web site, I noticed someone had already come up with quite a nice solution for both problems.

Instead of attaching the wheel directly to the spinner, attach a gear shaft, then have another gear shaft attach to the first at an angle, then attach the wheel to that. This takes all the strain off the spinner, and allows your wheel to be mounted at a more natural angle. A challenging job to be sure, but sounds well worth it!

: Plenty of people have thought about it, but most come to the conclusion that it's just too much weight/leverage for the spinner to handle for long. Besides, either your spinner will end up mounted at an angle, or else your wheel will be straight like a bus :)
