I use 3/4" partical board or plywood for my panels...as long as there are runners on each side for the board to rest on...and a tight snap latch on each side the panel feels as solid as you can get....I can probably pick the machine up by the panel that is made of plywood.
If you plan to use wood...and want to install t-molding...definitely go with plywood.
