One good design idea I just saw was to have the most commonly used controls be permanent,
but then have a hotswappable section for less-used controls.
One of the recent project additions here, the Arcade Euphoria one, had a panel with 2 8way joys with 6 buttons each.
In the middle was a PC-type trackball, not hacked apart, just placed in a cutout for it. Then, there was a spinner module, and a 4-way joy module that could fit into the same space as the trackball.
I thought that was a neat idea!
You could have 4 permanent joysticks - each with a set of buttons.
That would enable 4-player games like Gauntlet as well as 2-player dual joystick games.
Then, you could have a hot-swapping module section for a spinner, trackball, and 4-way joy.
I think most of the 4-way joystick games will take turns for multi-player games - so you'd only need one 4-way stick.
