: Hello Everyone,
: I assume that in the coming weeks I will be posting often on this board so let me first start by introducing myself.
: Im a 16 year old male from sydney australia, Like playing the odd arcade game, and really enjoy building "things".

: Now the other day I got my hands on a copy of Metal Slug for playstation which I could ad to my collection of some 73 playstation games :) . So I popped it in my playstation and started playing. Now metal slug being probalbly one of my altime faourite arcade games I was expecting alot from it, And ill admit the port to psx was fun, but it was missing something, it was missing the abillity to be able to put all your waeght behind pounding 3 buttons set out on something the size of desk !

: It was missing the arcade experiance.

: So I set out to get myself an arcade stick. After checking the prices , I thought they seemed terribly overpriced and decided i would take a shot at building my own, So I jumped on the web and lo and behold i end up at this site.
: But what I found here was completely diferent to what I was looking for, here were whole bloody arcade machine ! I must say that after getting the jist of hat these people were doing I decided then and there I was making my own :)
: After telling my mates they all laughed and said it wouldnt be done, but agreed to some all night frogger sessions if I do finish it.

: So this is where I was hoping you could help me, Ive read up a fair bit about the numerous objects etc required for getting the job done and am motivated to do it. But I need a few things answered/cleared up first.

: ( I wioll just be running the MAME emulator , most likely with the ArcadeOs Frontend )

: 1. Supplier -
: Now this will probalbly be the main problem for me, as there doesnt seem to be many arcade parts suppliers operating out of OZ. It would be a mommoth help if anyone could tell me if they knew any ?
: At the moment im most likely going to be ordering from Happ Controls as they seem the "best", But it would be easier if I could get it from australia.
: Also I have about 10 weeks to do this project ( well the cabinet side of things anyway ) after which school ends and it means no more workshop for me ! So does anyone know how long Happ normally takes to send international ?

: 2. The Cabinet -
: I searched around and found a few plans which I will modify to my own needs, And just was curious if people think MDF is fine to use ? I dont have acess to any "Classic" arcade machines to see what they use, and a cant remeber either.
: So what wood do people think is appropriet ?
: At the moment I will use MDF.

: 3. Joysticks -
: I am going to make a 2 player cabinet and only want to get 2 joysticks for it, So naturally I want more bang for my buck.
: So I was wondering what joysticks people recommend. I will need an 8 way as most games I will play require it , But would also like the use of a 4 way if possible. So I noticed Happ Controls Universal stick claiming it has 8 way and 4 way.
: I was wondering if this stick is any good? and what is the method of switching between 8 and 4 way.

: 4. Monitor -
: This definantly seems to be the hardest thing to unerstand but I think I have made my decision. I decided that a pc monitor was too expensive and too small. An arcade monitor seemed very hassley , so i decided that I will use a tv.
: Could someone please explain carefully or point me too a link that explains the disadvanatges of running a tv monitor ? And therefore what graphics card should I get ?

: 5.Trackball-
: I think I might install a trackball ? what do people recommend. Does it reall enhance the playibilty of games , and which ones ? BEsides a bowling game i have never used a trackball/spinnre at an arcade ( before my time ) so really dont have something to gauge it on. But it seems like a good edition so I need help making my mind up.

: 6.CPU -
: THis is my main problem.. The computer. At the moment I dont have a computer I can put into the cabinet ( I willl get one tho ;o). So I need help on what it should be. Now keep in mind I want to keep costs down as low as possible for the computer , cause the more money I save there th more money I can spen dn the cabinet. And I can always upgrade the computer later.
: Okay I wanna get the best soundcard, What would that be ?
: What is everyones recommendations for processor speed. I really might be in the deep end as I see people putting 800Mhz P3 into there cabinets ( which I simply cant afford, My "regular" computer is a 300mhz Celeron with 64mb Ram ) . Now I think that 800Mhz is overdoing it , What do you think Is a reasonable speed that should be able to run most games. A definantly want to be able to play the metal slugs, and maybe primal rage/virtua fighter.
: So what should be the go.
: Also what ram do you people think ?

: Okay I think I have rambled on enough now, It would be SOOOOO Great if people could help me . As you could imagine theres no one I can talk to down here so all help is much appreciated.

: Ill Probalbly have another message soon :)

: Thanks,
: Sonny Brown
